Eucharistic Adoration at church of St Mary of the Angel

What is your favorite place to pray? Why do we need to have a certain place to pray? If God is everywhere, can we pray anywhere? Yes We Can! We can pray anywhere at anytime, as St Paul said

Pray constantly (1Thes 5:17)

However we still need to find a special place to pray, why?

And in the morning, a great while before day, he rose and went out to a lonely place, and there he prayed. (Mark1:35)

But he withdrew to the wilderness and prayed. (Luke 5:16)

I think Jesus went to a certain place to pray because that place might be special. May be at that place He can pray to the Father openly and freely without any distractions. That is why, like Jesus we also need to have our wilderness or a lonely place to pray.

There are 3 reasons for me why I need a certain place to pray:

  1. Privacy: When I pray I share many things to God, I tried to share everything to Him. That is why I need a place where I can be with God alone.
  2. Distractions: There are so many distractions and noises in our life. Internet, TV, Hand phone, etc. I don’t want to be distracted by other things when I am praying. When I pray, I try to put God as the first priority.
  3. Intimacy: We may have different place where we can pray intimately with God. I think this is a way God want to be intimate with us. As we are created uniquely, we also have certain unique place where we can pray openly to God, or where we can pray deeper to God, or where we can feel God’s presence stronger.

Find your praying corner, or your wilderness. As your starting point I would like to share my 5 praying corners:

  1. Church: I am not talking about the Mass. Sometimes I like to go to church, sit at the pew, being alone with God. Looking at the large crucifix, tabernacle, and altar help me to feel God’s presence more strongly.
  2. Adoration room: Some churches provide adoration room where we can find the Blessed Sacrament (A.k.a Jesus). Looking at the host and in the silent ambiance help me to concentrate to Jesus and listen to Him.
  3. Bed room: I used to pray in my room when I stayed in a single room. I put a crucifix and lighted a candle. I can be alone with God. I like to verbalize when I pray, because it helps me to focus and express my prayer more tangibly. I like to pray while sitting on my bed, but I don’t really recommend this because it usually make me fall asleep.
  4. Bath room: Yes, bath room. For some people, they like to sing while taking shower, strangely I like to pray. I don’t really know why (maybe this is a way for God to be intimate with me), I often receive inspiration, consolation, word of God while taking shower. What I mean praying in the bath room is not about a dialog, but more a monologue. Listening to God.
  5. Outdoor: I used to pray while jogging. When I am stress I like to jog to distress, and it becomes quite natural to share all my problem to God while I was jogging.
